A rare glimpse into a vanished era of Japanese modernism. Captured shortly before the original Hotel Okura was demolished, this piece documents the quiet, rhythmic business of the city within a space that remained unchanged for decades. The composition follows the movements of salarymen through the hotel’s lower levels, framed by the intricate geometric carpets and mid-century textures that defined the 1960s masterpiece.

Shot on 35mm film, the image blurs the line between the present and the past. As I ascended the staircase to leave, the interplay of light and architecture created a scene so authentic to the hotel’s heritage that only the subtle presence of a mobile phone anchors it to the modern day.
